"Natural, My Ass", Sugar Coated Lies & SLS

Updated: Dec 20, 2022

The Sugar Coated Lie Destroying You & Your Pets Health

SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) is actually a chemical compound pesticide and herbicide usually made from petroleum, coconut, or palm oil, that is commonly used to kill plants and insects. You will find it in almost ALL of your "Natural" or "Plant Powered" pest repellants. Makers of SLS recently petitioned to have SLS listed as an approved pesticide for organic farming. The application was denied because of its polluting properties and environmental damage. SLS made from palm oil contributes massively to deforestation.

Sodium lauryl sulfate has the chemical formula C12H25SO4Na, and has many other names such as sodium mono lauryl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium monolauryl sulfate, sodium dodecane sulfate, lauryl alcohol, hydrogen sulfate - sodium salt, n-lauryl sulfate sodium and finally sulfuric acid monolauryl ester sodium salt! It is a widely used ingredient in household and industrial items.

It has corrosive properties. According to the American College of Toxicity, this includes corrosion of the fats and proteins that make up skin and muscle. SLS can be found in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and car wash soaps

How Dangerous Can It Be ?

There are many health dangers associated with SLS, which is surprising considering it's in the majority of most personal care products.

1) Organ system toxicity, in animal studies.

2) It's highly irritating to the skin, eyes, respiratory system if inhaled.

3)Very toxic if swallowed, probable oral lethal dose 0.5-5 g/kg

4) It was shown to cause cataracts in adults, and is proven to inhibit the proper formation of eyes in small children

5) It emits toxic fumes when heated, a hot shower with an SLS shampoo doesn't seem so refreshing now.

6) Nitrate and other solvent contamination. Toxic solvents, including carcinogenic nitrates are used in the manufacturing of SLS, traces of which can remain in the product

7) It helps other chemicals get into your body that creates seizures. SLS is a penetration enhancer, meaning that its molecules are so small they’re able to cross the membranes of your body’s cells. Once cells are compromised, they become more vulnerable to other toxic chemicals that may be with the SLS.

However it has been deemed "generally regarded as safe" by the FDA (GRAS), and many investigatory pharmaceutical associations in small doses. I think common sense tells us that you wouldn't accept a dinner invitation if it was made known you'd be served food with small doses of neurological toxins, even if the FDA said "good enough for who it's for", but let's consider how many doses a day you're potentially getting.

Who Doesn't Love A Good Lather, But At What Cost ?

SLS is a widely used ingredient in household & pet products, it's great at making suds too. Soaps, shampoos, bubble-baths, tooth paste, dish soap, laundry detergent, childrens soaps & shampoos, stain removers, carpet cleaner, fabric glue, body wash, shaving cream, mascara, mouthwash, facial cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen.

Check your labels on your favorite "Natural" products too, look for the those less conspicuous words above, even when the front of the product says "SLS Free"!!
